Festival director and concept creator-Monisha Charan.

Mystical Myths – The Theatre Festival in Singapore (September 4-6, 2025) stood out as an innovative and engaging celebration of theatrical creativity, offering a diverse range of performances that successfully merged absurdity with believability. Festival director and creator Monisha Charan brought fresh, experimental concepts to the stage, in Season 3 pushing boundaries while maintaining a deep connection to both Singaporean theatre and the unique, multicultural essence of the festival.

Overview

Tangled:
This performance was gripping as it explored complex human emotions with a dark twist. Director Rahul Phondke’s sensitive and brilliant direction of Sunita Lad Bhamray’s dark take on the Rapunzel story brought an almost surreal intensity to the narrative. Charu Madan Kashyap’s portrayal of Mrs. O’Hare was both delicate and extremely powerful and well  nuanced with her mannerisms and body language exuding pathos from the audience. Her adoption of her stage persona was heartrending. Neeraj Sujanani as Marty McFly, with his wit and perfect enunciation, brought a different energy to the narrative,  He infused the role with a dynamic energy that was both refreshing and enigmatic, layering the performance with subtle tension and intrigue.  Samaira Sareen meted out a perfect ending with her memorable performance.

The production stood out as an emotionally charged piece with excellent character development, pulling the audience into the web of its complexities.

Tingara Buddana:
Singapore’s premier of Chandrakant Patil’s classic, was a delightful and whimsical exploration of absurdity. Director  Soumya Verma’s brilliant direction and vision was sharp and effective, making absurdity believable. The unique and magical premise of the mother of an adult onion child was brilliantly brought to life by Nidhi Chopra Khanna as Buddhirani. With grace and emotional intelligence, she inhabited the role fully, revealing the many layers of her character . Vishal Khatri’s powerful portrayal of the Onion Ullagadi man was both humorous and poignant. Through his nuanced performance, Khatri breathed life into his character, leaving an indelible impression that echoed far beyond the stage. Lagnajit Patnaik’s playful and balanced Buddha Raja brought an air of playful mystery, adding layers of complexity to the unfolding drama. His presence was both light-hearted and profound, subtly amplifying the play’s magical realism.

Tingara  Buddana was an unforgettable and engaging watch highlighting the fraillty of the human ego.

Clean:
Yogesh Tadwalkar’s mime performance in Clean was a rare, silent monologue that conveyed deep emotion and storytelling without words. The ambiguity of the characters and situations drew the audience into a world of mystical, invisible connections. Mime as a theatre form is mystical in many ways as it draws people into an imaginary world . It was a difficult genre to execute, but Tadwalkar’s mastery of the form made this pantomime an unforgettable and striking performance of the festival.

The Act:
Saurabh Sardana brought the mystical and humorous to life in an extremely entertaining well articulated and quirky production. The playful and comedic performance, filled with guru madness, offered a light-hearted break while still connecting deeply with the overarching theme of mythical storytelling. Sardana’s vibrant energy, combining dance, humor, and spirituality, made the ACT a fitting and extremely well-loved intervention and a great conclusion to the festival’s dynamic offerings.

Conclusion:

Mystical Myths Season 3 was a brilliant exploration of diverse storytelling techniques, blending different genres, cultures, and forms of performance. The festival succeeded in creating an immersive environment where myths were not only retold but also reimagined, with each piece showcasing exceptional performances and creative direction. The experimental nature of the festival made it stand out, and its bold approach to combining humor, absurdity, surrealism and deep emotion kept the audience engaged throughout.

Overall, Mystical Myths Season 3 provided a blend of powerful narratives and performances, making for an unforgettable and enriching theatrical experience for any theatre lover!
